Welcome to the Training Materials for Exercise Green Cloud
Thank you for agreeing to participate in this exercise and welcome to the training materials for Exercise Green Cloud (EGC).
As you will see and hear in the posted training materials, we have developed a training package for Self-Care Decontamination (activities to be undertaken prior to the arrival of established Hazmat Teams) following best practices and in collaboration with many subject matter expert partners. Development includes a number of protocols to address psychosocial considerations throughout the self-care decontamination process and the more traditional gross decontamination and technical decontamination (showering) processes.
Exercise Green Cloud will provide you with an opportunity to test these protocols, enhance your existing skills and training, and provide you with a unique and exciting opportunity to participate in a collaborative and prepared exercise. You will not have to memorize all of the training materials posted below, but rather the purpose is to familiarize and orient yourselves with the content and practice of Self-Care Decontamination. All of the content listed in this training package will be available to you on the day of the exercise for your reference. You do not need to bring the training materials with you to the exercise.
Given the breadth of material to be covered, you will need to allow time to review the materials well before the day of the exercise. Please set aside two to three hours to review the training materials in advance of the scheduled exercise.
Part A. Self-Care Decontamination
The information contained in the following 20 minute video is based on part of a four year research project “Simulation Training and Exercise Collaboratory” (SIMTEC) conducted by the Justice Institute of BC to identify ways in which Incident Command Post responders, Hazmat Teams and Emergency Operations Centre personnel can incorporate psychosocial considerations into self-decontamination protocols into their decision making. Importantly this video discusses strategies for addressing issues that arise when decontaminating at-risk populations and those with additional needs.

Part B. Self-Care Decontamination Protocols
We ask that you review the following training videos and materials; ideally in sequence. There are 12 units of various length; some of the unit contents and video clips are only a couple of minutes long and have been separated into units for the convenience of access to specific steps and population care.
Units 1, 2 and 3 introduce the concept of Self-Care Decontamination during a CBRNE and hazardous substance event that results in human exposure requiring decontamination. This series of videos is intended as a training tool for First Responders and Health First Receivers. It will describe and demonstrate the process for Self Care Decontamination – the first and fastest response for decontamination that people can carry out at the scene and under the direction of a First Responder. Also, all of the Self-Care Decontamination Scripts have been included within the Unit 2 training package as this material is intended to be available at the time that a First Responder arrives on scene.
Important: Unit 4: Children and Infants and Unit 5: At-Risk Populations are of particular importance when considering how best to assist anyone with mobility, visual, communicative, or medical aids and those that may have other significant mental health or physical conditions that will require special considerations.
